With my limited race experience I do not have much to draw on. However, after volunteering at Wuhoo where I manned a TA/CP I noticed one thing. A lot of teams will all go get their passport signed rather then sending one person to get it signed and the rest getting prepared. If the race is close and multiple teams are waiting for their passport to get signed this can cause a delay of several minutes which in close races add up.

Do not be afraid to help prep someone elses equipment either. If they are waiting to get their passport signed or even going to the outhouse you can get their stuff ready for them if yours is ready.
