Clackamas River Runoff Report

"The best laid plans...", or so the saying goes! I arrived at this year's Clackamas River Run-Off, held yearly at Milo McIver State Park, with two things in mind. One, I haven't had nearly the time to train this year as I would like, so my conditioning is lacking and two, it has not been raining for 2-weeks straight, like last year, so the trails should be smooth and fast. So, maybe my conditioning wouldn't be so noticeable!

Once again, the X-Adventure Raid U.S. stage proved to be a grueling, fast-paced event. I raced with Team C&D; Zodiac/Blueline--a new team for me, although I knew some of the teammates from previous races. Our race lineup was Chuck, Jason, Amanda and myself, with Jerry and Cathy as support crew.

We traveled to McCall on Wednesday to give ourselves plenty of time to be rested for the race. Our home for the week was a cabin at the Tamarack Resort (strategically located 100 yards from the finish line) complete with kitchen, laundry, and deck with grill and hot tub. The spacious house immediately filled with race gear and bikes, leaving almost no room to move around. Thursday we biked and hiked lightly around the resort. Friday's check-in process went much more smoothly than last year and we had completed the entire circuit, including rappel test, in an hour. After the pre-race meeting, we settled into the cabin for a homecooked meal and started plotting CPs on our maps. By 10 p.m. we had our gear packed, maps plotted and were posturing for bed while Jerry and Cathy loaded the trucks for our early morning departure.

An Adventure Rookie's Rememberance

I slept like a baby last night; I woke up screaming every two hours. Apparently my blow-up mattress just wasn't willing to keep up the good fight for one more night. Thankfully that was no reflection of the generosity of our gracious hosts who provided the warm spot to sleep for the night (Thanks Robin and Carol).

Then again, it could have been my nerves talking to me in my fitfulness asking whether I brought the right gloves for the cold. Did I have enough HEED? Would I be able to digest the food I brought without vomiting? Could I physically keep up with my experienced racing partner? Would that numb feeling in my toes go away? Is that lump in my stomach the caterpillars waiting to blossom into butterflies? Ah...Sunday means football...I wonder who's playing on TV...will the Eagles do well...feeling sleepy...very sleepy...

What do you mean it's time to get up? Yeah, yeah...I'm awake. Thanks for the coffee.

BEAST 5 rece report

We Won the Lottery

By the time we finished the first biking section, we already had two tires that needed air, one crash on the ice, one messed up derailer, one lost pair of bike gloves, one bike helmet left behind and Yumay had just discovered that she was going to be doing the trail running section of the race in her bike shoes because her trekking shoes were still back at Marymoor Park and we were up in the Redmond Watershed. This could be expected from a lottery team who had only met in person a few hours earlier at the pre-race check in. The semi random lottery of solo racers had teamed me up with Duncan Sailor (lead navigator of team Purefit/Missinglink.com), John Zobel and Yumay Chang. Prior to 8 am on the race day, I had never met John, only spoken to Yumay a few times but never trained with her, and trained and raced against Duncan, but never raced with him. With that in mind or early race miscues were nothing to be overly surprised about. What was surprising was that there were only enough bikes for two or three teams sitting around the transition area as we took off on the trail run.

Wicked Ocean 2005 Race Report

"Here's the deal," Reed said as we finished the pre-race shopping binge at the western-most Fred Meyer store on the contiguous 48 states, "if you have to go . . . No. 2, you can't go in the 5th wheel, you have to drive down the road about half a mile, turn left at the brown sign and use the rest area. I'll flash my lights at the turn off when we head out there." "greaaaat" I thought - I could hardly contain myself - literally.

Hi everybody, Mark and I were the volunteers at TA3. I am a fellow adventure racers whose team lost their navigator just before the race so Mark and I volunteered to help Shane and Kathleen. We got there Friday after fighting traffic all the way down from Portland. Choosing Highway 53 was not a smart move. The plan to have fried eggs for breakfast on Sunday morning was changed to scrambled. Being the adventurous people that were are, we brought the tent and thought,

Wicked Ocean Report

After 5 months with hardly a drop of rain in the NW, the first big front of the year dumped 1.75 inches on the course as the Wicked crew was setting up. The drive out to the coast was thru torrential downpours. It didn't look good. After check-in, most of us "hard-core" adventure racers who had plans to "camp out" snuck into town and filled up the hotels.

During the morning prep and 7:00am start, amazingly, the rain threatened but held off. We got pretty darn lucky and stayed dry most of the day.
