Race Resume

Team AdventureCarolinas is based out of Spartanburg, SC

Here are some pics taken on the trail that leads from the Dam/ Spillway to the Shelter and connects to the Foster's Mill loop. This section is clearly marked as off-limits to horses but as you can see they have destroyed and nearly made impassable this section of hiking only trail. I have e-mailed the Park Service with this information but they have not replied nor as of a couple weeks ago made any improvements or deterants from the horse's destructive nature. My mission here is to gather support to pressure the SC State Parks service to improve their trail system for family activities in the community rather that sit by and allow the trails to be destroyed by horses. See for yourself by taking a hike or run on the Foster's Mill area trails. You will see that the vast majority is a muddy mess and only gets worse as they don't improve the trails but simply move the trail over widening the destruction. A list of e-mail addresses can be found below to voice your opinion directly. I encourage any feedback from both parties. I would like to understand why horse riders don't take the care and consideration to maintain their trails like the mountain bikers do on the other side of the river.

Croft State Natural Area

Destructive nature of horseback riding:

Purpose:         The proliferation of family outdoor opportunities in Spartanburg and surrounding communities and parks for a healthier lifestyle.

8 basic effects of horse-riding on the natural and cultural values have been identified:

*          destruction of vegetation -widespread impact caused by trampling and wandering off trails - adversely affects conservation of plants and animals, park use by others and water catchment protection.

*          accelerated erosion of trails especially those on steeper slopes - fire trails have become so badly eroded that they can not be used by firefighting vehicles and rehabilitation of unauthorised trails in highly unsuitable areas is both difficult.

*          sedimentation and siltation of water courses.

*          altered watercourse patterns interrupting the natural drainage system resulting in subtle changes that are difficult to detect.

*          water pollution from horse feces increasing level of nutrition, bacterial and viral input to streams.

*          disturbance of native animals by horses and pets.

*          disturbance to other park users - noise, sight, smell and being forced off trails.

*          sedentary activity promotes unhealthy lifestyle.

Adventure: pronounced "Ad·ven·ture"; is defined as an undertaking usually involving danger and unknown risks. Adventure racing is a fast growing "new" sport made up of "old" disciplines. The great attraction to it is the fact that you typically go into a race knowing very little about its format and course. Its not only a test of physical toughness, but mental toughness too! Whether it is a sprint, one-day, or a multi-day expedition race, the drive is the same, to complete the race without a DNF.

"Too many people short change their lives by avoiding new experiences, afraid of the possible embarrassment of failure. But we can't continue to learn, mature without trying new things. To participate is to live; spectators only exist!"

STW 8-Hour Adventure Race
Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002
Sumter National Forest
STW race summary - Race started at 7am with 19 teams on the banks of the Broad River at the Woods Ferry Recreation Area east of Chester, SC. We received our maps and after a short pre-race briefing, the race started. It began with ~3 mile run on trails and gravel to pick up our 4th teammate, a brick to carry the length of the race. Then back to the transition area for a ~6 mile canoe leg upstream and then back after retreiving a checkpoint - a puzzle piece. We had to carry the boats a 1/4 mile around the TA once we were done before heading into the TA to get ready for some mtn. biking. The mtn. biking course was flagged as we would have plenty of fun orienteering later. The mtn. biking was appox. 14.5 miles of singletrack, forest and gravel roads. Some of the most fun riding we've done in an AR. Once around the course and collecting the 5 checkpoints, it was back to the TA but before we got their we had to do a special test involving removing a tube from one wheel and then putting it back. When we were done riding we got to do some fun and challenging orienteering. Our team had to copy five cp's from a master map and then find them however we could on foot. Once done with that it was to the finish where we assembled the puzzle from the pieces we'd retrieved from the cp's and then get our team over the wall. Thanks for a great race to Bill, Forestry Service and the volunteers and you can expect a full capacity next year! Bill Werling

June 2002 Mountain Sports Festival Adventure Race directed by RacingAhead.com was Team New England Backpackers first race together as a team. Team members are Drew Wilson, Deborah Doyle and Tim LaRose.
Promptly at 6am the race started and Thomas ran up with the maps and instructions. He read out the order of events and began plotting our course. The course would be we were told, in the race info, about 45 total mile give or take 5 for going the wrong way. It would begin with a hike to a point on the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) to the unmanned bike drop off, then bike down to Asheville to the last TA for a short paddle on the French Broad and ending with some urban orienteering to the town square and finish. Find out what happened....[More]

May 2002 Carolina Challenge Adventure Race directed by Radical Adventures was Team Oobe/ AdventureCarolinas.com first race together as a team. Team members are Drew Wilson, Kim Morrow and Ken Harris.
The race start was supposed to be at 11am but because of the weather things took a bit longer and luckily the downpours ceased around 11:20am for what would turn out to be a muddy/ exciting race. For any of you who run, you will have never experienced true cross-country until you've done 4 miles on horse trails after 8 hours of steady rainfall. A top-3 finish in the co-ed division would qualify the team for the Sprint National Championships later in 2002. Find out what happened....[More]

October 2001 12 Hour Appalachian "Not-So" Extreme Adventure Race directed by RacingAhead.com was team sponge Bob Square Pants first race together as a team. Team members are Drew wilson, Deborah Doyle and Richard Ridlehuber.
We’ve been preparing for weeks, training, getting gear together, and talking about different scenarios. Deb, co-captain, has been regaining fitness lost during time off for some surgery. She’s been training with her hard-core Atlanta pals and recently placed 5th in an in-line skate race. She’s peaking. Drew, team captain, has been dealing with one of those moving leg injuries since August that never seemed to get healed completely before he opted to “hammer” and re-injure himself. He trains daily and is strong in each of the disciplines, running/hiking, paddling, and Mtn biking and maintains a high level of fitness. I started running 5 weeks ago and lifting weights to develop my weaknesses that are inherent to any cyclist. Cyclists have strong hearts, legs that are good for pushing a crank in circles thousands of times an hour, a good sense of pace and endurance and bike handling skills. But cyclists do not have legs/ankles for hiking/running or arms/shoulders for paddling. [More]

Adventure Sports:
Adventure sports have been around for a long time. They include, but are not limited to these disciplines: running, hiking, orienteering, biking, paddling, climbing and swimming. But we all know from our experiences that the greatest adventure component is the Mind. Mental tenacity is crucial in our sport as the races and days get longer, and the weather always seems to deteriorate during our progress.
